What Age is Best to Start Gymnastics?

There's no single "perfect" age to start gymnastics. The truth is, kids can benefit from movement-based programs much earlier than most people realize. At Flip Out, we offer gymnastics classes for kids as young as 10 months old.

The Earlier, the Better

Research consistently shows that early movement experiences play a huge role in a child's physical and cognitive development. Gymnastics, even in its most playful form, helps young children build coordination, balance, body awareness, and motor skills. These are all foundations that support everything from learning to walk confidently to eventually excelling in sports.

What Do Classes Look Like for Babies and Toddlers?

For our tiniest athletes, gymnastics looks a lot like play. Our Me & You program is a caregiver and toddler class designed for children ages 10 months to 2¾ years old. Every class is taken alongside a parent or caregiver.

Classes include songs, obstacle courses, and age-appropriate gymnastics skills on bars, beam, vault, and tumbling. It's a space to grow, giggle, and celebrate every milestone together! First grips on the bar, first steps on the beam, and all the in-between moments that kids love.

What About Preschoolers?

Ages 3 and 4 are a wonderful time to introduce more structured gymnastics. Kids this age are naturally curious, energetic, and eager to try new things. At Flip Out, our FUNdamental Gymnastics classes for ages 3–4 focus on building coordination, strength, and body control through fun circuits and drills. It's the perfect introduction to the sport before moving into more skill-focused programming.

School-Age Kids & Beyond

If your child is older and just getting started, don't worry. It's never too late! Our Fun & Flips and Flipnastics classes welcome beginner gymnasts ages 5 and up, with step-by-step progressions designed to build real skills in a supportive, encouraging environment. Every child moves at their own pace, and our coaches meet them exactly where they are.

Are you looking to uncover your own gymnastics potential? We even offer adult gymnastics classes for grown-ups who are rekindling an old passion or trying the sport for the very first time. Learn more.

How Long Should Gymnastics Class Be?

Our program is based around your child’s growing stamina, focus, and attention span. We’ve created a program with intentional progression so our students always feel engaged without overdoing it.

Little ones are given time to stretch and explore new skills. As they grow more focused, they’re given progressively more time to hone skills and exercise.
