Gymnastics vs. Tumbling: What's the Difference?

If you've ever looked at Flip Out's class schedule and wondered whether to sign your child up for gymnastics or tumbling, you're in the right place! Both programs are incredible for kids, but they offer different experiences and nurture different skill sets. Here's what you need to know.
Gymnastics is the Broader Sport
Gymnastics is a broad sport covering a wide range of apparatus and disciplines, including bars, beam, vault, floor, and more. Tumbling is a specific discipline within gymnastics that focuses entirely on floor-based acrobatic skills, think cartwheels, round-offs, back handsprings, and flips. While all tumblers train gymnastics fundamentals, tumbling classes offer a more focused experience for athletes who want to zero in on those explosive, high-energy floor skills.
At Flip Out, both pathways are built on the same core values: nourishing a Strong Mind, Strong Body, and Strong Heart.
What Skills Will My Child Learn?

So Which One Is Right for Me or My Child?
If your child is brand new to gymnastics, curious about movement, or wants to explore multiple disciplines, a recreational gymnastics class is a natural starting point. They'll build foundational strength and body awareness across a variety of equipment and skills.
If your child already has some gymnastics experience, is drawn to floor work, or wants to develop the kind of skills you see in cheerleading, hip hop dance, or competitive tumbling, a dedicated tumbling class is likely a great fit.
